Working hard to protect the Wellesbourne Allotments

Over the last four years I have been working hard to protect the Wellesbourne Allotments from the threat of development and this has involved a series of meetings with the Allotment Holders Association, Sir Jeremy Wright QC MP and the County Councillor Penny-Anne O'Donnell.

Collectively we have continued to put pressure on The Diocese of Coventry which owns the land, together with the planning policy team at Stratford-on-Avon District Council to remove this site from the Site Allocations Plan as a Reserve Site.

The Wellesbourne Allotments comprises over 100 plots, has been cultivated for nearly 190 years and provides the most historic and vital community asset with over 50 villagers on the waiting list. In addition, there is a dementia friendly plot and another assigned to the local primary school, which are both extensively used delivering significant mental health and well-being benefits.

An alternative site for the allotments has never been an option, in view of the existing site’s soil fertile quality and development over nearly two centuries, together with its central location being in the heart of the village.

Delivering on our promises!

With more than 59,000 households across the district, it was always inevitable to discover that some residents had not received their food caddies leading up to the launch on 1st August.

However, making sure the new 123+ Waste Collection got off to a great start was essential, which is why myself and other Conservative councillors took time out of their weekend to personally deliver food caddies to a few residents who for one reason or another had not received them.

This tended to be those who had moved house recently or were in hard to find properties by Biffa's sub-contractors.

Everyone I spoke to welcomed the personal service and were rather surprised to see their local councillor volunteering as a bin lady!

In my view this goes hand in hand with working hard in the community and it is all part of our role, particularly as we know how important bin collections are to local residents.
