Planning Committee

Planning has to be one of the most challenging areas to work on as a councillor and fulfilling my role for the Planning Committee East involves huge responsibilities.

In a nutshell as a member of the planning committee we are responsible for the determination of planning applications for major developments and smaller applications which carry objections. Our role is to assess the proposals against national and local planning policy and carefully balance the benefits of proposed development with any impacts on the surroundings.

The committee members are required to consider all planning proposals in the wider public interest. Decisions are restricted to planning considerations, and cannot seek to control non-planning issues or duplicate other legislative controls.

What this means in practice is that we cannot turn down an application because we don't like it, don't want it or the local residents are opposed to it ... we can only refuse applications if there are robust planning reasons to do so.

It's been a steep learning curve since being elected in May 2014 but I have been seriously busy attending hours of training sessions and meetings to get to grips with my new role.

Talk about an action-packed start but I've really enjoyed it and believe that whatever you do in life you get out what you put it.  It's just great to meet so many people and feel you can make a difference sometimes and there's nothing better than feeling you are really helping people with their particular issues ... often housing and planning issues of course.

I've also got to know all the parish councillors who work extremely hard on all our behalf and do a great job.  Thank you all for your continued support and friendship.
